Jankaea heldreichii is a famous local endemic of Mt Olympus, Greece, where it has a wide altitudinal range, growing in shady crevices of limestone cliffs at ca 400– 2400 m. It belongs to the mainly tropical family Gesneriaceae which is represented by only five species in Europe, four in the Balkans and one in the Pyrenees – all probably Tertiary relicts.
