The October cover image shows Daphne mezereum, an early-flowering, deciduous fleshy-fruited shrub native to the temperate parts of Europe. In the study by Arnell et al., the authors mapped the spatial distribution of individuals in a population in boreo-nemoral Sweden and measured the numbers of flowers and fruits and fruit removal. They analysed the effects of plant height, numbers of flowers and fruits, distance to forest edge, and neighbouring flower and fruit density on reproductive performance and fruit removal by birds.
