In the framework of the revision of the Turkish Dianthus species, the specimens collected from Kızıldağ (Derebucak, Konya) was described as a new species. It was named as Dianthus serpentinus Hamzaoğlu sp. nov., and its description, images, chorology and ecology, and threat category were given. It was compared with a closely related species D. acrochlorus, based on its general morphology and seed micromorphology. In addition to phylogenetic relationships between the closely related species, some Dianthus species belonging to section Dentati in Turkey, D. serpentinus and additionally 14 Dianthus species sequences obtained from GenBank (the genetic sequence database at the National Center for Biotechnology Information, NCBI) were examined with DNA sequence data from the nuclear ribosomal internally transcribed spacer region. The results obtained from the molecular analyses were supported with the morphological data.
