Senecio karelinioides (Asteraceae-Senecioneae) is a species with a rather distinctive habit and an uncertain relationship in the genus. Based on evidence from macro- and micro-morphology, karyology, and ITS and ETS sequence data, we demonstrate that it is actually a member of Synotis and closely related to Syn. atractylidifolia. The relationship is further supported by the approximately unbiased and the Swofford–Olsen–Waddell–Hillis statistical topology tests. We thus transfer the species to Synotis as Syn. karelinioides, and place it in the same section with Syn. atractylidifolia. Sen. sect. Karelinioidei is recombined as Syn. sect. Karelinioidei for this section, and the lectotype of Syn. karelinioides is designated.
