CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: TUNDRA TRANSITIONS
Submitted by editor on 29 September 2025.
Nordic Journal of Botany invites abstract submissions to the new special issue entitled Tundra Transitions: Understanding Vegetation Change Across Scales and Systems
Tundra ecosystems are undergoing rapid and unprecedented transformations, driven by rapid climate change, shifting disturbance regimes, and changing species interactions. These transitions are not uniform – they unfold differently across spatial and temporal scales, from fine-scale plant traits and population dynamics to regional vegetation patterns and global biogeochemical cycles. At the same time, they are embedded within complex systems. Understanding vegetation change in the tundra thus requires a perspective across multiple temporal and spatial scales that can capture the broader implications of local processes.
This special issue invites contributions that advance our understanding of tundra vegetation dynamics across scales and systems. Studies from all small scales are welcome, provided they are framed within a broader ecological or conceptual context. We encourage authors to articulate how their findings inform, challenge, or connect to wider-scale dynamics without overextending the implications. We welcome empirical, theoretical, and methodological work that addresses themes such as, but not limited to, shrub expansion, permafrost-vegetation feedbacks, phenological shifts, and biodiversity responses of tundra change.
By emphasizing the importance of spatial and temporal context, this special issue aims to synthesize diverse insights into how and why tundra vegetation is changing and what this means for the resilience of Arctic and alpine environments in a rapidly changing climate.
